Administrative history

The Engineering Support and Technologies Division (EST) was created as part of the 1995 restructuring to succeed Mechanical Technologies Division (MT) with an enlarged mandate to provide centralized engineering services for the whole of CERN. In addition to mechanical technologies, it provided database applications in engineering, experimental areas for LHC including the detector/machine interface, and all alignment activities. EST comprised in eight groups providing services for both Accelerator and Research sectors:

  • DI : Divisional Administration and Planning
  • ESI : Engineering Support for Infrastructure
  • ESM : Engineering Support for Machines
  • ISS : Information Systems Support
  • LEA : Logistics for LHC Experiments and Areas
  • MF : Manufacturing Facilities
  • SM : Surface and Material Technologies
  • SU : Positioning Metrology and Surveying

The division, led by D. Güsewell, began in January 1996 and included most of the staff from MT division, except for some engineers and technicians who joined the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Division. In 2003, P. Ciriani was appointed divisional leader of EST division.

In 2004, Soutien Technique (ST) and EST divisions merged to form the Technical Support department (TS), still directed by P. Ciriani.
