Administrative history

In 1977 the proposal of the CHARM Collaboration (CERN-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Rome-Moscow Collaboration) to study semi-leptonic neutral current processes and muon polarization produced in neutrino and antineutrino interactions was accepted by the Experimental Physics (EP) Division.

The physics aims of this experiment were:

  1. The study of inclusive semi-leptonic neutral current neutrino interactions with nucleons.
  2. The measurement of polarization of m+ produced in antineutrino interactions in Fe.
  3. The measurement of polarization of m+ from dimuon events,
  4. The search for new particles.

CHARM (CERN-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Rome-Moscow Collaboration) Experiments

WA18: The data-taking of this SPS experiment began in 1978. WA18 started running with the complete apparatus in 1979, and was completed on the 3rd September 1984. WA18 is a study of semi-leptonic neutral-current processes and of m- polarization produced in n and n- interactions using counters.

WA65: The preparation of this SPS experiment began in 1980. WA65 was completed on the 13th September 1982. WA65 = further studies of prompt neutrino production in 400 GeV proton-nucleus collisions.

PS181: The preparation of this PS experiment began in 1980. The setting-up was done in 1982 and the data-taking began in 1983. This experiment is a contribution to the CERN neutrino oscillation program.

CHARM 2 (Brussels IIHE-CERN-Hamburg-Louvain-Moscow-Munich-Naples-Rome Collaboration) experiments

WA79: The preparation of this experiment began in 1983. The setting-up started is 1984. The data-taking began in 1986. WA79 was completed on the 12th August 1991. WA79 is a study of electron scattering at the SPS.
