Administrative history
Hoffmann studied physics at the Physics Institute of the University of Bonn (Germany). After obtaining his diploma and completing his thesis in 1972, he started work at CERN as a physicist in the ISR-Experimental support group (led by Franco Bonaudi) as a liaison physicist for the Split Field Magnet Facility (SFM) and also for experiments R105 (Measurement of high transverse momentum charged particles) and R702 (Search for Charmed Particles and Electron Pairs at the ISR). He participated in the ISR Long Range Planning Group on future colliders like LSR (Large Storage Ring project), LSR e-p, CHEEP (CERN Energy Electron-Proton facility).
In 1976 he worked on the proposal and realization of the monopole experiment R109 (Search for Magnetic Monopoles Using the Superconducting Solenoid) at the ISR.
In 1978 he was appointed as technical coordinator of the UA1 experiment.
From 1985 to 1989 he was a member of the DESY directorate (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron, Hamburg) responsible for central technical services including computing. In 1990 he became a member of the CERN Directorate, responsible for technical support until 1993.
In 1994 he was technical co-ordinator of ATLAS Collaboration.
In 1999 Hoffmann was appointed as Director for Technology Transfer and Scientific Computing (1999-2003), responsible for establishing Technology Transfer and Outreach at CERN and for the computing infrastructure for the LHC experimental programme, the LHC Computing Grid.
He engaged in many projects, such as the EU DataGrid, Crossgrid, DataTAG and EGEE (European Grid Infrastructure) and was member of ESTA, the European Science and Technology Assembly.
