Library accessibility improvements - new chair, ear plugs, PC screens and much more!

1 July, 2024

In a significant move to enhance user experience and accessibility, the CERN Library is unveiling a series of improvements aimed at making the space more user-friendly and accommodating to all patrons. These changes reflect the library's commitment to inclusivity and modernising its services to meet the diverse needs of the community.

One of the standout additions is the installation of ear plug dispensers and noise-cancelling headphones. These resources cater to individuals who require a quieter environment to concentrate. The ear plugs, offering a noise reduction of 28 decibels, can be simply taken from a dispenser next to the Bookshop entrance, and the noise-cancelling headphones, with a reduction of 35 decibels, are available to borrow at the Library Welcome Desk. For hygiene and comfort, disposable covers are provided with the headphones.

In a further effort to support patrons with visual impairments, magnifying glasses are now available at the Welcome Desk. This service aims to assist individuals who need help reading small print or examining detailed materials.

Navigating the library has also become easier with the relocation of subject signage to more visible locations. This change ensures that visitors can quickly find the sections they are interested in without unnecessary searching.

A significant digital enhancement is the ability to locate books directly from the library catalogue. If the book is available in the library, users can now see on which shelf a book is located with a link to CERN Maps (“Find it on shelf”).

Patrons can consult the catalogue using the two public PCs available in the library, which also provide access to e-resources. Users must log in to view these resources, and the system automatically logs out after a few minutes of inactivity to protect user information.

Additionally, the library has installed four screens where patrons can plug in their laptops. These improvements cater to the increasing demand for digital access and provide convenient options for both studying and accessing online resources.

Finally, the famous “Kuppel” chair is back in the Library, and ready to be used! This single space allows people to isolate themselves as the round structure reduces the surrounding noise.

More improvements of the CERN Library are on the horizon, promising ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and user-friendly environment. Patrons are encouraged to visit and experience the new enhancements for themselves.
