Biographical history
Juergen May studied at the University of Tübigen (Germany) where he obtained his diploma in physics in 1967.
From 1967 to 1975 he worked at DESY Institute on electron scattering experiments. He left DESY in 1975 to become an applied physicist at CERN, joigning the WA1 experiment team, also known as the CDHS experiment (CERN-Dortmund-Heildelberg-Saclay), the first neutrino experiment on the SPS accelerator, led by Jack Steinberger.
In 1978 he was appointed as SPS physics coordinator.
May joined the ALEPH collaboration (LEP experiment), in 1982, and was responsible for the R&D, construction and running in of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). Between 1990 to 1995 he was a member of the board of directors at DESY. Back at CERN in 1995, he became technical coordinator for ALEPH and LHCb (LHC experiments).
In 1997 he was appointed leader of the Information Technology (IT) division and in 1999 he became Technical Director of CERN, a post he held until 2003.

Scope and content
This record group covers the period 1997-2003 when May was leader of IT division, then CERN Technical Director.
He was responsible for the main activities of the technical divisions (ST, TIS and EST) during the period of LEP dismantling and LHC construction (civil engineering, technical infrastructure, etc.).
He was also responsible for the technical computing and CERN computing infrastructure, radioactive waste management and the enforcement of environmental and radiation-protection practices.
The collection contains various documents on the INB procedure (Installations Nucléaires de Base), environmental issues, projects for roads and carparks, correspondence with DRIRE (Direction Régionale de l’Industrie, de la Recherche et de l'Environnement) and OPRI (Office de Protection contre les Rayonnements Ionisants) and files about relations with Member and Host States, and with the CERN internal audit and technology transfer services.
